Antidote: Pro Immigrant open letter at the Cheese Factory
Today was a day for family as well as a land speed record for packing up the car.
We had to head out by 9:00 am and we left at 9:50 - less than an hour behind schedule: awesome!!
First stop: Menomonie, WI. A visit to John Yaeger who loves to get visitors and post cards. We left him with a map and a promise to send a card from each stop.
Because of our delayed departure (still an amazing exit time!) we barely made it to the Thorp Cemetery for the internment of Uncle John's ashes. The event was capped off with the most poignant rendition of Taps I have ever heard.
I was a bit concerned about decorum after the service when the kids cavorted and wrestled their way through the cemetery. But then my mother's cousin, Mare, told us the cemetery was a favorite spot for kids of her generation to run amok. Tradition carried out!
The car hit 110,000 during out trip. According to extensive research Grace has conducted, a 10,000 mile mark means ice-cream for the whole family. Fortunately a cheese factory was near by complete with bouncy pad, numerous samples and delicious ice-cream. I was happy to see a statement in support of the value of Immigrants from the cheese factory, especially in such an enclave of rightwing politics.
The prelude to our adventure around the big lake was a spell in the smaller Lake Wisota. The Harycki cousins opened up their beautiful Andersen lake home to guests. Boat rides, fishing, snail collecting were the backdrop to many wonderful conversations among the cousins of my generation who have not seen each other in decades! So much fun was had, we forgot to get out of the moment to take pictures. However, I have a few lake pictures of the kids who started with wading and ended up fully clothed and soaking wet.
A good night's sleep in a small, simple but very clean roadside motel and we're off to the Apostle Islands tomorrow.
