Day Five: Niagara Falls to Canton, NY

Countries: Canada, US

States: New York

Today's miles: 380

Miles to date: 1400

Mileage: who knows - - the kilometer business has muddied the waters.

Proud Mommy Moment: I did not bat an eyelash when the kids used the money their Grandmother gave them to spend on vacation to purchase a mood ring (Grace) and a robot ring (Danny) at the KOA gift shop. I did compensate, however, by dropping $94 at the Roots Outlet Store.

Lesson Learned: You get what you pay for. The hotel you book 10 miles out of town to save money is half as expensive. This means it is also half as big, half as clean and twice as old. The free continental breakfast is half as good and half as nutritious. (This is all fine, by the way.)

Self Discovery: I must be easy to talk to. First a belly dancer and then on this day, the owner of a Cambodian Restaurant we found off the beaten path. He gave me numerous tips on things to do in the area, extolled the virtues of Cambodian coffee (very strong and very sweet and very good), and filled me in on his recent trip to Cambodia.

Health tip: when sleeping with a seven year old in a double bed, don't forget to protect your kidneys with a spare pillow.

Memories:

Danny: Saying goodbye to Niagara Falls.

Grace: The bacon eating wasp who joined us for breakfast

Therese: Eating Cambodian food and talking to the restaurant owner.

Gordon: Crossing the Rainbow Bridge back into the US.

All of us: Driving, driving, driving.

The run down:

We broke camp today, finishing off the bacon and eggs and gobbling down a batch of blueberry pancakes. By 11:00 we were on the road...for about 4 minutes. I had to make a stop at the Roots Outlet Store for some Canadian memorabilia. This little excursion cost $94 and took about an hour of our time. But hey: we saved $50 and I got to talk to the sales person about how he couldn't stand the craziness of his job and it would be worth the craziness of traveling 1000 miles with two kids if only we would take him with us to Minneapolis.

Then we hit the road. We drove and drove.

We decided to break up the trip with a stop at a fun place to eat. "Grandma Hattie's Tea Shop" sounded like a place that would fit the bill. Unfortunately we could not find it and the place our navigator said it should be was someone's front yard. So instead, we stumbled upon a place called "The Soup Spoon" and stopped simply because they advertised Wifi. It turned out to be an excellent Cambodian Restaurant. Gordon and I had wonderful meals and loaded up on good strong coffee for the last leg of our day's travels.

We got to our little hotel room at about 8:30 and by 9:00 we were at the little pizzeria in town eating what turned out to be excellent pizza.

My hips thanked me as I sank into a very squishy yet surprisingly comfortable bed and planned for tomorrow.

Only two:

Our farewell to Canada and Niagara Falls as we crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Also a picture of the kids' reentry into screen-time as they zoned out to the Olympics while eating a bagel and cream cheese at a Cambodian Restaurant.
